![]() ![]() Want to learn more? Learn to play Dwarf Fortress. Whether or not you play the game, this website exists as an archive of the best stories from Dwarf Fortress – for anyone to enjoy. The game, however, does exist – and can be downloaded for free, here.ĭwarf Fortress is not for everyone. The stories which emerge from playing Dwarf Fortress are so rich and detailed, that many people suspect such a game cannot possibly exist. Like the story of the Cave Swallowman who gave his life defending the last Dwarven outpost in the world, the story of the eagle who befriended a Clothesmaker and fought off a dragon to protect him, or the story of a sword forged from despair and hatred, which reclaimed a fortress from demons. This sets the stage for some of the most incredible stories ever to emerge from a computer game. As you dig into the earth, you must defend your fortress from the dangers of the outside world, and from the terrors lurking deep underground. Amidst this chaos, the player creates a single fortress to expand the Dwarven empire. It is also a great deal of fun, and a challen. The beings which inhabit these worlds feel real – each with their own personalities, needs, moods, and goals. In this series I hope to show people that Dwarf Fortress is not as hard to play as some would have you believe. The game procedurally generates unique fantasy worlds for the player, each with hundreds of years of recorded history. Underneath all of this, however, there lies a rich, deep, and powerful game. The incomprehensible ASCII graphics, obtuse user interface, high CPU requirements, and absurdly steep learning curve will deter most people from playing. Your first impression of the game will not be good. Dwarf Fortress is one of the most unique and baffling computer games ever created. ![]()
